How to Import Pictures from your Camera using Picasa

  1. Plug your camera into the USB cable attached to your computer.  Turn the Camera power switch to the automatic ‘on’ position.
  2. The Picasa main program window will open to the “Import” tab (with small picture of a camera).
  3. On the top left, the “Import from:” dropdown box should display the camera name (example: C643 Zoom Digital Camera).
  4. Ensure at the bottom left, the “Import to:” dropdown box displays “My Pictures”, the “Folder title:” dropdown box displays “Date Taken (YYYY-MM-DD)” and the “After Copying:” dropdown box displays “Delete everything on card”.  These options may be changed by clicking on the dropdown arrow on the right side of each box as desired.
  5. Once you have verified the settings, click the “Import All” button at the bottom of the screen.  If the above settings are selected, this will remove all pictures from the camera, copy them to your “My Pictures” folder and arrange all pictures in sub-directories by date the picture was taken.  Note:  Ensure the date settings are correct on the camera, as this is what sets the “Date Taken” for each picture.

 

How to View and Edit Pictures in Picasa

  1. If the “Import” tab is open in Picasa, you can click the “Library” tab to view all pictures saved on the computer.  Otherwise, if not importing pictures from a camera or device, Picasa will simply open directly to display the Library.
  2. Albums, People and Folders are displayed in the left columnThumbnails of pictures are displayed in the right columnNote:  you can adjust the size of the thumbnail (and correspondingly how many pictures are displayed on the screen by sliding the slider on the bottom bar immediately under the pictures on the right side.
  3. Under the Folders section (left column), the folder names in your “My Pictures” directory are displayed.  Note:  Folder names are sorted by year of creation in reverse chronological order.
  4. You can rename the folder by right clicking on the folder name and selecting “Edit Folder Description” from the pop-up contextual menu that appears.  Note:  there are many available functions accessed by right clicking either on the folder or on a single picture thumbnail.
  5. To edit or view a single picture, simple double click on the thumbnail.  Note:  There are many adjustments and enhancements available for fixing pictures in this view.  To return to seeing all pictures in the library, click the “Back to Library” button on the top left of the single picture view window. 

 

How to Upload a picture to your Online Picasa Picture Gallery on the Web

  1. In either the Library view or the Single Picture view, select one or multiple pictures.  When thumbnails are selected, they will be outlined in blueNote:  to select multiple pictures from the Library thumbnail view, hold the Ctrl button on your keyboard and single click on the desired photos.  When all desired photos have been selected, simply release the Ctrl button.
  2. Click the Upload button on the bottom bar.  The “Upload to Picasa Web Albums” box will open.
  3. The default album name will appear in the “Upload to this album:” bar at the top.  To change what album is created online, either select an existing online album from the dropdown arrow, or click the “New” button on the right.
  4. Leave the “Size to upload” dropdown menu to the “Recommended: …” setting.
  5. The “Visibility for this album” dropdown is how you control who can view the pictures in the album.  If you select the “Anyone with the link” option from the dropdown arrow menu, you will be able to enter the desired person’s email later to send them a link to the photos.  Note:  This is the only way for someone to view the photos; no one will be able to see the album without the link in the email.
  6. Leave all other settings at defaults.  The “Your Account:  XX (Free)” bar displays how much space you have remaining to create albums on the web.  Note:  The “Upgrade” button will allow you to purchase more space if desired, although the free default space should allow you to upload and store many pictures before this is necessary.
  7. Click the “Upload” button to create the album on the web.  The “Upload Manager” window will appear and display the progress of the transfer.  This may take several minutes to complete depending on the number of pictures.  Click the “Hide” button when complete to go back to Picassa to upload another album  OR  click the “View Online” button to open Firefox and view albums (and edit or share) on the web.  NotePictures are not removed from your computer.  This process only sends a copy of the picture to the online album.

 

How to View Your Picasa Online Albums on the Web and Send Email Invitations

  1. On the top right corner of the Picasa Library screen, your username is displayed.  Note:  Your Picasa Online ID must be set up before this step.
  2. Click the “Web Albums” link beside your username.  Your default web browser will open a web page to display your online albums.
  3. Click on the “My Photos” tab (on the web page) to display all your online albums.  Note:  the “Profile Photos” web album only contains the pictures that are be displayed beside your user name in a small icon.  Note: this is a permanent album and cannot be removed.
  4. The “Edit visibility” link at the top left of the web page allows you to select how each album is shared by selecting the desired option from the drop down menu arrow.  “Limited, anyone with the link” option allows you to control who can view each album.
  5. To share the photos in an album, double click on the album thumbnail.  The My Photos window should open and display all pictures in the album.  Click the “Share” link above the photos to display the “Share Album” window.  Enter the desired individual’s email address in the “To:” field, and add comments to the “Message:” field as desired.  When ready, click the “Share Via Email” button on the bottom right to send the email link to the entered email address.  Note:  the entered email address will receive an email from you with the link for them to view this (and only this) online album; your other online albums will not be seen.
  6. Note:  You can click the “My Photos” tab at the top to return to see all online albums you have created.
